AI Conversational Marketing Automation 3.9/5 — our rating

Manychat

AI chat automation platform for Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and SMS that turns conversations into sales.

Manychat is worth it if you sell through Instagram, WhatsApp or Messenger and can’t keep up with replying to direct messages one by one: it lets you build automated flows that answer frequent questions, send catalogs, or hand off to a human seller when the conversation calls for it, without knowing how to code. It was built to solve one very specific problem — automating direct-message conversations on social media — and that’s still what it does best.

What sets it apart from other automation tools is how easy it is to build these flows with a visual drag-and-drop editor, and in particular Instagram comment and mention automation: automatically replying to anyone who comments “I want it” on a post, for example, remains one of the most used features among creators and small brands. In 2026 the platform significantly restructured its plans, moving conversational AI into a separate paid module instead of bundling it into the base tiers.

In practice

This shows up in very concrete flows: someone comments on an Instagram post and automatically gets a direct message with more information or a purchase link, a customer messages on WhatsApp asking about a product and the bot replies with the catalog before handing off to a person if needed, or a launch campaign triggers a scheduled sequence of SMS and email messages at once. A store selling through Instagram or WhatsApp can also build an abandoned-cart flow: if someone asked about a price and never followed up, an automatic message 24 hours later picks the conversation back up instead of losing the sale. For a small business or creator without a dedicated support team, this covers a good chunk of repetitive queries without hiring anyone else.

Plans and pricing (2026)

  • Free — cut down to a handful of active contacts, meant as a sandbox to try the platform before paying, not to run a real business.
  • Essential (starting around USD 14-17/mo) — up to 250 active contacts, basic automation on Instagram and Messenger.
  • Pro (starting around USD 29/mo) — up to 2,500 active contacts, adds more channels (WhatsApp, SMS, email).
  • Business (starting around USD 69/mo) — up to 7,500 active contacts, with more automation and analytics.
  • Advanced (starting around USD 139/mo) — up to 25,000 active contacts, for higher-volume operations.

Pricing scales with the number of active contacts, not by team seat, and going over your plan’s limit means an extra per-contact charge. The conversational AI feature (AI Step, with intent recognition and suggestions inside the flow builder) is a paid add-on on top of any of these plans, and on WhatsApp, Meta’s per-conversation charges are added as well.

For this review we looked at the plan structure in place after Manychat’s March 2026 pricing overhaul, paying particular attention to how the free plan changed and to the fact that conversational AI is no longer included in the base plans.

What to know before choosing

The most important thing to keep in mind is that, if your strategy depends on conversational AI, the real cost isn’t the plan price you see first: you need to add the AI add-on and, on WhatsApp, Meta’s per-conversation fees. Several independent reviews also note that this conversational AI works today closer to a keyword-matching system with pre-scripted replies than genuinely conversational AI, so it’s worth testing before assuming it replaces a person.

Worth it for small businesses and creators who sell through social media and need to automate repetitive replies on Instagram or WhatsApp. If your message volume is low or your business doesn’t live on those channels, it’s probably not worth adding another tool to the stack — and if all you need is sending WhatsApp campaigns without the whole conversational automation layer, simpler and cheaper alternatives focused just on that channel may exist.

Pros

  • Very easy-to-use visual flow builder, no code required
  • Instagram DM automation (replies to comments and mentions) is a widely recognized strong point
  • Covers multiple channels: Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok, SMS and email

Cons

  • The free plan shrank drastically after the 2026 pricing overhaul and now works more as a sandbox than a real option for running a business
  • Conversational AI (AI Step) is a separate paid add-on, at extra cost on top of any base plan
