Synthesia
Generates videos with AI avatars from text. Used for corporate training, explainer videos and multilingual content.
Synthesia is worth it if you need to produce training or explainer videos that get updated often, without recording on camera, hiring actors or booking a studio. It turns a text script into a video with an AI avatar speaking, and it remains one of the most widely used tools for corporate training content, employee onboarding and product explainer videos.
What sets it apart from traditional video production isn’t just skipping the camera and actors, it’s the speed of updating: when the script changes — an internal policy gets revised, a product gains a new feature — there’s no need to re-record anything. You edit the text and the entire video regenerates in minutes, even in a different language, without coordinating with anyone again.
In practice
Its strongest use case is still high-volume internal content: onboarding new employees, compliance policies that get updated periodically, or product tutorials that need versions in several languages without recording each one separately. It’s also useful for customer-facing explainer videos where the avatar’s corporate tone isn’t a problem — for example, a summary of new dashboard features, or a welcome video for an online course. The multilingual angle compounds the savings: a global company can localize the same onboarding video into a dozen markets from one script instead of commissioning a separate voiceover or reshoot for each one.
Plans and pricing (2026)
- Free — 10 minutes of video per month, access to 9 avatars, with a watermark and Synthesia’s logo visible.
- Starter (USD 29/mo, or USD 18/mo billed annually) — 10 minutes per month, 125+ avatars, 3 personal avatars of your own, no watermark, and video download.
- Creator (USD 89/mo, or about USD 64/mo billed annually) — 30 minutes per month, 180+ avatars, 5 personal avatars, multiple avatars in the same scene, interactive video, and API access.
- Enterprise (custom pricing) — unlimited minutes, 240+ avatars, unlimited personal avatars, SSO/SAML, and SCORM export for corporate e-learning platforms.
One thing worth knowing before choosing a plan: Synthesia charges per editor seat, and both Starter and Creator include just one seat — it isn’t a shared pool of minutes for several people on a team, so adding another person means paying for a whole additional plan for them.
For this review we tested generating a short video with several avatars from the catalog, editing the script and seeing its effect on the final output, and regenerating the same video in a different language from the same original script.
What to know before choosing
The most real limitation is still how natural the avatar comes across: it’s improved enormously compared to earlier versions, but for most audiences it’s still recognizable that an AI, not a real person, is speaking. For premium brand content or public-facing advertising, that difference still matters. It’s also not a shared minutes pool per team: cost scales fast if several people need to edit in parallel.
Worth it for high-volume internal or explainer content that gets updated often, where the production time saved easily justifies the plan’s cost. If what you need is polished brand video for a one-off campaign, traditional video production still makes more sense — you’re paying for the time saved on repeat edits, not for a one-time cinematic result.
Pros
- No camera, studio or actors needed to produce a video
- Generates the same video in 160+ languages from a single script
- Ideal for content that gets updated often (onboarding, training)
Cons
- The avatars, while much improved, are still noticeably AI-generated
- Each plan includes just one editor seat; adding people means adding the per-seat cost
