Runway is worth it if you work in film, animation or professional audiovisual content and prioritize quality over speed or price. It generates clips from text or a reference image, with quality that in independent tests usually ranks among the best on the market, and it’s one of the more established names in AI video tools.

What sets it apart from simpler generators is that it doesn’t stop at “text to video”: besides generating from scratch, it has tools to edit, extend, upscale or lip-sync existing clips, making it useful not just for creating new content but for touching up material already filmed, all inside the same workflow.

In practice

This translates into very concrete uses: generating a supporting shot for a short film when reshooting isn’t an option, extending a clip by a few seconds when it came up short in the edit, upscaling an old video before publishing it, or generating a believable lip sync over already-shot footage to dub it into another language. The most commonly cited downside is still speed and predictability: generation times can be long depending on the model you pick, and the result doesn’t always match exactly what the prompt asked for on the first try.

It’s also widely used for pre-visualization: putting together an animated storyboard for a scene before going out to shoot with real equipment, testing different framings or camera moves without touching a tripod, or showing a client what a concept would look like before approving budget for the full production. At larger studios, it often coexists with traditional editing tools: Runway generates or touches up the material, and the final assembly gets finished in a conventional video editor.

One detail worth weighing when picking a plan: credit spend per second of video varies quite a bit by model (newer, higher-quality generations like Gen-4.5 burn through noticeably more per second than faster Turbo-style models), so two people on the same plan can end up with very different usage experiences depending on which model they pick for daily work.

What to know before choosing

Runway’s most real limitation is the actual cost of heavy use: since credits are spent per second of generated video and resolution affects how much you burn through, producing long or high-quality content every day can push you onto a much pricier plan than you expected going in. On top of that, prompt adherence isn’t perfect, so it’s worth budgeting time (and credits) for more than one attempt per shot. It’s also not the simplest tool for someone who’s never generated video with AI before: figuring out which model suits each type of result takes some trial and error at the start.

It’s worth it for anyone who needs cinematic quality and can tolerate some variability in the output, especially in professional audiovisual production. If your use is more occasional or your budget is tight, the Free or Standard plan is enough to experiment before committing to something pricier.
