Its style tends to be more “artistic” and less “generic” than other tools, which made it popular for book and album covers, concept art, moodboards and campaign pieces where the visual result matters as much as production speed.

The difference from newer generators isn’t just aesthetic: Midjourney built a huge community around the product from the start, and that constant feedback loop is part of why the model keeps improving quickly. It also didn’t stop at still images — it added video tools to animate an existing generation, plus character and style reference features that let you keep consistency across different generations, which matters for anyone who needs to illustrate a series of scenes with the same character instead of disconnected, one-off images.

In practice

This shows up in uses like generating a book or album cover without hiring an illustrator, producing dozens of character variations to nail down a project’s art direction before moving forward, building a visual moodboard to show a client before locking in a campaign, or animating an already-generated image to use as a short video clip on social media. Relax mode, available from the Standard plan up, also lets you keep generating without overpaying when delivery speed isn’t urgent.

All paid plans include access to the video features, though those generations also draw down the plan’s fast hours. For commercial use (selling the generated work or using it in brand campaigns), any paid plan grants the corresponding rights — it’s still worth checking the current terms if the project is for a client and revenue is above a certain threshold, since exact conditions change with account size.

For this review we looked at the image generation flow, the character and style reference features, and the video tools available on the Standard plan, the tier Midjourney’s own community points to as the most common choice for people using it semi-professionally without reaching studio-level volume.

What to know before choosing

The most real limitation is the “fast hours” structure: if the plan runs short mid-month, the options are waiting for renewal, switching to Relax mode (noticeably slower) or upgrading — there’s no simple way to buy extra hours a la carte the way there is with some other image tools. There’s also no free trial period, so you have to be willing to pay before testing the actual result with your own ideas. The interface also still carries its Discord-bot origins: even though a full web app now exists, a lot of the community and tutorials are still centered on the Discord workflow, which can add an extra learning curve at the start.

Worth it for anyone who’s going to use it fairly regularly and prioritizes the visual result over convenience — designers, studios and marketing teams that already have budget set aside for image tools. For very occasional use, like generating the odd image once in a while, another generator with a free plan is probably enough without needing a full monthly subscription.
